Twitter to now penalise hateful, abusive accounts

News
Aimed at reducing hateful content on its platform, Twitter will start penalising accounts from Monday that include “hateful imagery and display names”, or those who “use username, display name, or profile bio to engage in abusive behaviour”, the media reported. According to a report in ReCode late on Sunday, “for Twitter, the two new restrictions are attempts to combat rampant harassment and abuse on the site”. Twitter announced new guidelines covering abuse, hateful conduct, violence and physical harm in November. Facing criticism over the years for its poor handling of “abuse”, Twitter “updated” its rules in October and November, clarifying its policies on graphic violence, spam and self-harm, among others. The changes are part of revamp to Twitter’s policies surrou

Paytm to use QR code as dominant payment form

News
Mumbai: Paytm is launching an aggressive nationwide campaign to promote QR code as the dominant form of acceptance of payments using either unified payments interface (UPI) or debit cards at zero cost. The move comes in the wake of the government decision to subsidise the charges on debit card payments that are usually borne by small merchants and is reminiscent of Paytm’s post-demonetisation campaign to acquire merchants for e-wallet payments. Paytm COO Kiran Vasireddy said, “We have been working for several months to see how we can enable all payment instruments in one QR code. Going forward, we expect most merchants to accept payments directly into their bank accounts.”The government decision on subsidising merchant discount rate (MDR, or the charges paid by shops on card payme

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Friday struck down the 2014 amendment rules that mandated pictorial health warnings to cover 85 percent of tobacco product packaging space, holding that they violated Constitutional norms. However, the court made it clear that the 40 percent pictorial health warning rule, which existed prior to the amendment rules, would remain in force. A division bench comprising Justices B S Patil and B V Nagarathna passed the order on a batch of petitions filed by various tobacco manufacturing companies and others from across the country, challenging the 85 per cent pictorial warning rule notified by the Union Health Ministry. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Amendment Rules, 2014 (COTPA) came into effect from April 1 last y

Govt sets aside Rs10,000 crore service tax demand on IT firms

News
New Delhi: The government on Tuesday said it has set aside Rs10,000 crore service tax demand on dozens of IT companies. The tax department had slapped service tax demand notices on about 200 IT and IT-enabled services companies in the country. It had asked them to return export benefits claimed between 2012 and 2016 on softwares provided to clients outside India. The government’s move comes a day after IT companies raised the issue of tax demand with finance minister Arun Jaitley in the customary pre-budget consultations. The finance ministry issued a statement to state that the commissioner (appeals) set aside the orders of the lower adjudicating authority. The statement referred to reports of tax officials raising tax demand in respect of export of IT/ITes provided to clients abroad
